Investigators are still trying to determine what started a fire that heavily damaged a vacant home in Fulton Township Wednesday morning, March 12. Three firefighters were injured battling the blaze. Two, Robert Fulton firefighters James Rodgers II and Michael Childress, fell through a floor into the basement while battling the blaze. That led to a Mayday call, summoning additional firefighters and equipment. Eventually, about 100 volunteers were called to the scene. Two students were charged after one allegedly sold a controlled substance to the other while both were on a school bus coming from Solanco High School, 585 Solanco Rd., East Drumore Township, at 2:40 p.m. on January 15, Trooper Brian McNally reported.
State police also reported the following incidents in the Southern End: Four people were slightly injured when two pickup trucks collided at the intersection of Park Ave. and Robert Fulton Highway (Rt. 222), East Drumore Township, at 11:44 a.m. on December 8, Trooper Nelson Renno reported.
A burglar armed with a large rock broke into the Valero gas station at the corner of Scotland Rd. and Lancaster Pike (Rt. 272) at 11:27 p.m. on November 30, Trooper Curtis L. Matthews reported.
According to the trooper, the thief hit the glass door with the rock, popping the door open. He then went inside, took cash and cigarettes, and fled, running over a hill near the station. Anyone with information about the burglary should call police at 299-7650. State police also reported the following incidents in the Southern End: A man who called state police to report a burglary was charged with possession of marijuana, Trooper Philip Strosser reported.
According to the trooper, Leroy Buzzard III, 36, of 345 May Post Office Rd., Strasburg Township, called police at 9:15 a.m. on November 21 and reported hearing someone in the attic of his home. Buzzard also told troopers he had seen someone looking out of the attic gable vent. Sometimes, a family just needs a little help to get through tough times. "We see it more and more," said Charles Grimasuckas. "People need a little assistance." Four Quarryville families got a some help last Saturday afternoon, thanks to members of the Quarryville Police Department and community members. "We knew there were people who could use a Thanksgiving dinner," Grimasuckas said. "I asked the other officers if they wanted to get involved, and they did." A passenger was hurt when a minivan hit a mailbox on Buck Rd. west of Lee Dr., East Drumore Township, at 2:03 p.m. on November 16, Trooper Nelson Renno reported.
There were no injuries when a car and a minivan collided on Beaver Valley Pike (Rt. 222) at Eagle Dr., Providence Township, at 10:04 p.m. on October 24, Trooper Nicholas Cortese reported.
According to the trooper, Raul Rojas-Alvarez, 36, of New Providence, was driving south and tried to turn left onto Eagle Dr. His minivan collided with a car being driven north on Rt. 222 by Jessica L. Klufkee, 34, of Red Lion. Rojas-Alvarez was cited for the collision, the trooper said. State police also reported the following incidents in the Southern End: A 35-year-old man died in a farming accident in the 300 block of Sproul Rd., Colerain Township, early Wednesday afternoon, October 16.
The body of David F. Stoltzfus was recovered from about five feet of liquid manure. Family members said the man had last been seen alive about an hour before emergency personnel were called at 1:05 p.m. It took volunteers less than 10 minutes to locate the man's body. The pit is in a one-story section of the farm's dairy barn. Quarryville firefighters, Medic 94, and Oxford ambulance responded to the scene, as did state police. Stoltzfus was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning, Trooper Bertrum A. James reported. The death has been ruled accidental. Heavy rains rolled across the Southern End on Friday morning, October 11, dumping more than five inches of rain on the region. Small streams flooded, closing many roads. At least one traffic accident was blamed on the storm. One person was hurt and three others escaped injury when a car being driven east on Street Rd., Colerain Township, slid on the wet road, ran off the highway, went down an embankment, and landed on its roof in Gables Run. The occupants escaped the partially-submerged car before firefighters arrived. Someone stole about 600 feet of copper cable from between several utility poles in the 1400 block of Slate Hill Rd., Drumore Township, between September 13 and 24, Trooper Anthony L. Holloway reported.
State police also reported the following incidents in the Southern End: Fire destroyed a tobacco barn and most of its contents Tuesday afternoon, September 24.
The fire broke out at the Emanuel Esh farm, 132 Academy Rd., Colerain Township, shortly after noon. By the time family members noticed the blaze, it had begun to engulf the barn. Responding volunteers could see a column of black smoke from five miles away and called for additional equipment before the first apparatus arrived. Firefighters prevented the flames from igniting an adjacent building and saved several stacks of lumber behind the barn. The fire was ignited by a kiln used to dry the lumber, Chief Welk said. The 50 foot by 70 foot barn was destroyed by the flames. Family members, neighbors, and firefighters managed to pull some equipment from the barn before they were driven back by the fire. The fire caused an estimated $45,000 damage to the building and its contents, Quarryville Fire Chief Jamie Welk said. Volunteers and equipment from Bart Township, Oxford, Robert Fulton, Refton, Cochranville, Willow Street, and Elkton, Md., assisted at the scene. About 100 volunteers had the fire under control by 2:25 p.m.; firefighters remained on the scene until 4:05 p.m. One family member sustained minor burns to his right arm. He was not transported to a hospital for treatment. Getting around bridges with new, lower weight limits will be inconvenient and expensive, local trucking firm officials say.
The new limits PennDOT plans to list for ten Southern End bridges will send trucks on lengthy and expensive detours, truckers said. The new weight limits could also delay responding emergency equipment. People who lost items in recent burglaries are invited to come to the state police barrack, 2099 Lincoln Highway East (Rt. 30) to help identify their property.
The items, recovered after the September 10 arrest of a suspect, will be available at the barrack from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, September 13, and from 6a.m. until noon on Saturday, September 14. Two people were charged with assault following an incident in the 1100 block of Slate Hill Rd., Drumore Township, at 11:45 p.m. on August 22, Trooper Aaron Davis reported.
According to the trooper, A 19-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy, both from Quarryville, tried to smash a mailbox. The property owner retrieved the bat and followed the teens, damaging their vehicle with the ball bat, the trooper said. Ken Work won't be wearing a police uniform and a pistol this week. Instead, he'll be dressed in a new uniform - a dark shirt and khaki pants. That will mark his transition to the position of borough manager. He will still be the police chief, a position he has held for a dozen years, but he will not be going on patrol. Work was appointed borough manager last month. He replaces Alfred Drayovitch Jr., who retired August 30. For the past month, Drayovitch has been helping Work make the transition. A New Providence resident was charged with harassment and disorderly conduct following a dispute at 142 Truce Rd., Providence Township, at 10:32 a.m. on August 3, Trooper Bertrum A. James reported.
Dane E. Saenen, 45, was cited after he allegedly pushed, restrained, and yelled at a 56-year-old woman. Saenen reportedly pushed the woman away from the home's door, refusing to let the woman leave. He also threatened the woman, the trooper said. State police also reported the following incidents in the Southern End: Fire heavily damaged a garage and its contents Tuesday afternoon, July 30. The fire at the property of Tom and Lorraine Newell, 369 Pine Grove Rd., Little Britain Township, broke out shortly after noon. The building was well involved when the first of nearly 100 firefighters arrived, Robert Fulton Fire Chief Tracy Tomlinson said. State police are investigating numerous vandalism incidents in Sunset Estates mobile home park. Someone damaged windows in the 100 block of Truce Rd. between July 11 and 17, Trooper First Class Kelly Osborne-Filson reported. Someone damaged a vehicle parked in the 400 block of Dogwood Ln. on the night of July 14, Trooper James Spencer reported. Four Holstein cows were killed in two traffic accidents on Kirkwood Pike (Rt. 472) last week. The first collision occurred at 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Puseyville Rd. and Kirkwood Pike (Rt. 472). Three Holsteins were hit by a car and killed. The driver of the car was not hurt. The second collision occurred at 9:54 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, Trooper Cody Clark reported. According to the trooper, a milk truck was southbound between Noble Rd. and Maple Shade Rd. when a cow walked into the truck's path. A trailer loaded with bales of shredded paper overturned on Kirkwood Pike (Rt. 472) in Colerain Township early Wednesday afternoon, July 24. The trailer, pulled by a pickup truck, was southbound on Black Rock Hill between Wesley Rd. and Black Rock Rd. when it crossed the highway. The rig ran up an embankment and jackknifed, flipping the trailer and its load onto the northbound lane. The driver was shaken up in the crash but was not injured. The highway was closed for more than half an hour as firefighters moved the bales to one side of the road. Quarryville firefighters and fire police were still on the scene at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
